Comment changes in WordPress 2.7

19th October 2008 by Lyndi

You will notice that I have stopped using the threaded comments plugin that I had activated on this blog. The reason for this is the forthcoming changes with regards to comments that are included in WordPress 2.7. The threaded bits used by the mentioned plugin will not work in the new version of WordPress and therefore I have de-activated it. For now some of the comments might appear a little out of place but as new comments are made the situation will rectify itself.

Let’s get that feed out there

18th October 2008 by Lyndi

On a previous post, John from Potpolitics commented on what he had done with the Feedburner code on his site. This made me inquisitive and I visited his site to see what he had done. I liked what I saw and I implemented a version of the same thing on this blog. Allow me to show you just what changes I have made this time.

How to get more blog subscribers

17th October 2008 by steven

There are now estimated to be over 200 million blogs in 2008. Many cover very similar topics, and there are always going to be A list bloggers who take the lion’s share of the blog traffic on a particular subject.

However, getting new subscribers to your blog need not be difficult if you follow a few simple guidelines. Continue reading How to get more blog subscribers

WordPress Custom Fields with a Twist

13th October 2008 by Lyndi

I found an interesting article on just how easy it is to effectively use WordPress custom fields to add images to your posts. Many shy away from using custom fields as they reckon it is something to be used only in the magazine style themes, some even suggest that using these things is just too difficult and not worth the effort.

Do you need all those revisions?

11th October 2008 by Lyndi

Since WordPress 2.6 we have had a system of revisions within WordPress. This feature is very handy if you have multiple authors writing on your blog. If you are the sole author it is debatable if this feature is required at all. Every time you change a post, a revision file is automatically saved to the database. With time this could mean that you end up with a lot of stuff in the database you will never need.

It’s competition time

9th October 2008 by Lyndi

I have decided that releasing a new free WordPress theme every couple of months is not the way to go. Instead of this I am going to release a good general purpose theme. This theme I will keep updating as user needs change. The theme will also be updated with every new version of WordPress should it be necessary. The problem now is, just what features should this general purpose theme include?

Sprucing up that blogroll

8th October 2008 by Lyndi

The idea for this post was sparked by an interesting article by EyeSpi on link-love.

This article reminded me that this site’s blogroll is slightly different from most and I decided to tell you how I implemented these changes. I have previously posted on the reasons for this change. I do not show a list of text links in the blogroll, I show a graphic for each site. This blogroll I do not show on every page, it is only visible from the home page. The additional graphics do tend to slow the home page down slightly but I feel the benefits outweigh the slight loss in load time.

Comments on your WordPress pages

5th October 2008 by Lyndi

On the themes page of this site I have comments appearing. I was asked which plugin I used to make this happen. The answer to this is pretty simple, I did not use a plugin, I added a separate page template to my theme. When I add a new page in WordPress I can now choose between a default page (no comments) and my own template (with comments).
