10 Web Accessibility Evaluation Tools
Posted by sailor - 11/05/08 at 10:05 am
Here is a list of Web Accessibility Evaluation Tools. All these tools are free to use. Some of these tools have been around a long time but they are still very effective.
All these tools are based on the WCAG 1.0 guidelines. When the WCAG 2.0 guidelines are finally approved, these tests will most probably be updated to work against the new set of guidelines.
- Vischeck - Allows you to see your site as a colorblind user would.
- Total Validator- A HTML validator that includes a link checker as well as a spell checker.
- Page Valet- Another markup validator with all the bells and whistles included.
- Lynx Viewer - As the name suggests, this software allows you to see your pages as they would look like if they were viewed in Lynx.
- Flicker Rate Test - Check flicker rate either on entire page or individual graphics.
- EvalAccess - Evaluate your pages for accessibility.
- Colorblind Web Page Filter - See your pages as a colorblind user would.
- Etre Accessibility Check - Evaluate your pages against the accessibility guidelines.
- ATRC Web Accessibility Checker - This one will show you known problems, likely problems as well as potential problems.
- AccessColor - Check the contrast between the background and foreground colors you have used on your site.
If you have submitted your site to a few of these tests and you receive errors, please do not be disheartened. Getting your pages to be accessible is not an easy task, but it is definitely a worthy task.
If you have implemented at least the minimum accessibility guidelines on your site, do not forget to submit your site to iCare so that you can receive the recognition you deserve.

Arien, the nice thing about getting your site a bit more accessible is that not only does it help many different people, it also helps improve your own site quite considerably. A simple example of this would be that just by getting your markup to validate will assist with your SEO efforts. Thanks for visiting.
