New Look

Posted by Lyndi

You will notice that this blog has a new look. The theme used has no name, but if you look at the colors used you should be in no doubt about what the blog is all about.

There are a few errors I have just noticed (colors of links in comments, alignment of graphics) but hopefully I will have these fixed in a while. Right now I just wanted the theme up and running.

What makes this theme different from the previous one? This one is my toy. This theme will not be made available to anyone else. On this one I am going to play, test, try out new ideas and generally just enjoy myself. You might notice that things change quite often around here over the next few days.

The biggest difference however on this theme, is that it is ready for WordPress 2.7. If WordPress does not make serious changes to the new version between today and the release date, this theme is ready for all the new features the new version holds in store for all of us.

The Hybiscus theme which I did schedule for use on this site has now been put on the back burner and will be released as a free theme some time in the future.

I hope you find something on the theme you like. All comments on the new look will of course be welcomed. Let the playing commence.

Till next time.

  1. Sjeltur says:

Yep – I really like this theme !!!
    Good work….
BUT; uh… that “orange” in posting a comment….. maybe another color..?? ;)

  2. Jim Sefton says:

I like the new look, Lyndi… will be interested to see how you get on with your experiments.

If I could just comment on one “small” thing it would be the RSS logo up with the adverts is a bit blurry, and IMHO needs to be orange (so as not to confuse), but other than that it’s great. Well done :D

  3. Lyndi says:

Sjeltur, the orange in the comment box was a piece of code I forgot to remove. Fixed.

Jim, I am looking for an orange RSS graphic.

Everyone has got orange on the brain today. Thanks for the comments guys.

  4. Lyndi says:

Thanks Jim, I found the same page. If you refresh you should see the new image.

  5. StanHayes says:

    Really beautiful job. Kudos!

  6. Sjeltur says:

    Yep – really like it…. !!!
** bit jealous of people who are able to make this…. ;) **

  7. Lyndi says:

Sjeltur, no need to be jealous, it is actually very simple. There are some great tutorials out there. If you are interested, start reading and you will be building a theme in no time. The best tutorial I have seen on this topic is one by a guy called ‘Small Potato’. Unfortunately I do not have a link but a bit of Googling will do the trick.

  8. Dave says:

I really Like the new look. Very clean theme.
Here is a link to Small Potato Tutorial

  9. Web-Betty says:

Wonderful! I love it. So I guess I should take you out of the 10 things queue? :)

  10. Lyndi says:

Thanks Dave for the nice words and the link. Sjeltur, you now no longer have an excuse, I am waiting to see your own theme.

Web-Betty, there are still many little errors that I am busy fixing. This would actually be a good time for someone else to give the site a look-see. You would most probably pick up things that I missed. I would appreciate if you could still do the review.

  11. Vixen says:

I like this. Especially the color in the comments so they don’t run together. Nice job, Lyndi.

  12. Lyndi says:

Thanks Vixen. This one is still very much an ongoing project but I do suppose it will never be fully completed. It is like moving furniture around, it looks nice after the change but one soon gets tired of the new look and then you change things around again.

  13. Margaret says:

Ohh! I really like it Lyndi! What a great job you’ve done. I do like the alternating colors on the comment section. It’s working a lot like my two icons on alternating comments at my site. I did have fun making those, too.

Poor Stan – he’s getting a lot of “its like changing around the room because you’re tired of it” as a reason why we do this kind of stuff. I’ll bet he hasn’t changed very much more than the ads on his blog in a really loooooong time

  14. Rarst says:

    Looks very nice. :)

I find titles in sidebar very disconnected from text under them.

Gravatars are too small in my opinion. Such high-contrast comment area design can easily accept pretty big ones.

  15. Web-Betty says:

My pleasure Lyndi. I will bump you up the list a bit. :)

  16. Nihar says:

i like the new look. the color in the comment section is also good.

  17. Lyndi says:

Margaret, thanks for the nice words. Change is indeed not only necessary, it is fun.

Rarst, some nice ideas. Will look at the headings again, the gravatars do raise another problem. When comment threading is implemented the space available for the gravatar becomes less – will see what I can do though.

Thanks Nihar, everyone seems to like the bright colors in the comments. This is of course just an overflow from the colors in the footer section on the main page.

  18. Nishadha says:

I personally prefer the three column themes , but this one looks nice and very clean :)

  19. BioTecK says:

A very nice theme Lyndi! I like it!! :D
The colors really match together! ;)

  20. Very nice it threw me off at first.
I actually heard that you were mentioned on my blog :) I have a technique now after I bang them all up with my rants I like to pass them off to something positive to recover :)
Keep up the great work and awesome spirit :)
    Thanks

  21. wiehanne says:

I like the new theme so much! The sidebar box makes it looks so much neater and clean. :D

  22. wiehanne says:

Oh forget to tell you, I receive the above error message while wanting to comment here using Google Chrome. Is it normal?

  23. Icon says:

    Hi Lyndi,
Nice theme here. I can’t find RSS feed by mail here.
If I may suggest, for comments template, is it possible to make it to be rounded corner box ?
I’m looking forward to the final result.
    Good work, thanks.

  24. Margaret says:

Hey Lyndi — do you ever read the Sitepoint.com stuff?

    This video was rather interesting!

  25. Lyndi says:

    test comment in Google Chrome.

  26. Lyndi says:

Bioteck and John, thanks for the nice words.

wiehanne, you have got me worried. I just opened this site with Chrome and I get no errors. I played with all the cookie settings and still I can see everything properly. It even allowed me to post a comment. I will investigate the problem.

Icon, thanks for the nice tips. Both suggestions should appear soon.

Margaret, thanks for the link. CSS tables is something I have been reading about for a while now. At the moment it still seems to me to be a step backwards but we will have to see. Too many browsers do not yet understand these tables and therefore it cannot be used too seriously at the moment. If this works well (with sufficient browser support) somewhere in the future it will be a great time saver. Only time will tell.

  27. Lyndi says:

I have just noticed that this list of comments is getting pretty long and requires a bit of scrolling. This is something that WP 2.7 has got sorted. We will be able to spread comments across different pages. Roll on 2.7.

  28. wiehanne says:

It must be the problem with my Chrome or so. Sorry for making you worry. :)

  29. Jim Sefton says:

I got the same error a while back (remember, I emailed you about it Lyndi). I think it is a slightly buggy anti-spam system causing it. I was using Firefox too. If I remember correctly, copying the test, refreshing the page, and pasting it back in enabled the comment to be submitted.

  30. Lyndi says:

You’re right Jim, I forgot about that. Wiehanne, the problem could be on this side. I will test the thing by removing the anti-spam plugin and see what happens. If the relevant plugin is causing a problem it is so out of here.

  31. Louie says:

I Like it!!! I also like the old theme, the only thing is that it stretches itself when viewed on large screens.

  32. fragileheart says:

It’s pretty neat Lyndi! But I’m not sure I like that the backgrounds on the commends are so dark compared to everything else… is there such a thing as standing out ‘too much’? lol

But I do love this layout!

  33. Squeaky says:

    Lyndi, nice clean looking theme.

  34. Arun says:

The theme is simple, beautiful and of course very fast loading (as usual)!! :)

  35. Lyndi says:

Louie, the old one was a fluid design, this one is fixed.

Fragileheart, these colors are just a follow on from the colors in the footer section on the main page. They are a bit dark but I decided to stick to the colors as used by WordPress. I am sure I will also soon tire of the colors but then again they are easy to change.

    Squeaky, thanks.

Arun, I would rather have a fast ugly theme than a pretty one that is slow.

Thanks to all of you guys for the comments.

  36. Looks nice, and I like the wide sidebar. A little too grey for my own taste. I also don’t like the alternating black and blue comment colors, but I have a blog that does the same. So who am I to criticize?

  37. Lyndi says:

    Thanks Turnip

  38. Hicham says:

Neat blog + neat design, Lundi :)
