I have implemented a system of threaded comments on this blog. This changes the way of commenting on this site for all visitors with Javascript enabled browsers.
For those without Javascript no problems should be experienced as the normal way of commenting will still work.
If you have a look at the comments portion on this page you will notice that a ‘reply’ link has been added underneath each comment. Clicking on this link will enable you to comment specifically on the comment you have selected. A comment made in this way will appear directly underneath the relevant comment.
Should you want to comment in general to the article itself you simply need to scroll to the bottom of the comments and comment in the normal way.
The idea behind this is to try and get the comments more organized meaning that it should be easier to follow the conversation as the different threads will be kept together.
I have checked and everything seems to be working the way it should. If you experience any problems please let me know. I think this is rather sneaky, give them a toy to play with when they comment and they might comment more
.
I hope you enjoy using this system. If it causes any problems I will simply yank it out of here.
If you are interested in something similar, all of this was done with the help of the WordPress Thread Comment plugin.

This is supposed to be a feature in development by Wordpress, if I remember correctly. There is some debate if it will make it into WP 2.7 or not. Not sure if it is really necessary for most blogs, but it’s cool that you have it working.
I heard the same thing. That is what got me interested. If it works well and it is implemented in the new version of WP, I’ll simply whip this plugin out.
I find that the moment I join the conversation the comments tend to dry up. It is as if the guys think that I am wrapping up the conversation. This will allow me to comment at the different comments. Will have to see if it works.
Jim I do not know if you turned CommentLuv off but it appears as if I could have a problem here as CommentLuv did not work on your comment.
Nope, I just left it as default. Just to clarify, it is ticked on this comment too, as it was on the last ones.
It is definitely not working. You have just identified a problem. Thanks.
I have this on my site as well. I don’t think it changes your existing comments into threaded ones, but going forwards it does.
I personally like threaded comments as it helps me keep what people are commenting about straight. Most do comment on the post, but some occasionally are replying to one of the commenters comments.
I also like that this blog makes every other comment have a slightly different background color. That also helps keep things from running together.
I would like it if WP2.7 came with a BB style comment feature. I guess it’s the geek in me.

Margaret, unfortunately this plugin does leave the old comments alone. By ‘BB’ I think you mean the scheme by means of which comments are rated and then one can search for comments that meet a certain criteria. If this is what you mean, it would be a nice feature. Thanks for your comment.
Great to know that there is a plugin out there which implements threaded comment. It is very much useful when the number of comments grow…
Nihar, according to Jim (see comment above) this might become a built in feature in WP in an upcoming version. If this happens you will not even need a plugin. Thanks for your comment.
Nihar, I have just seen the latest from WP. Threaded comments has already been included in version 2.7. It would seem as if this is going to be quite some upgrade. ‘Sticky’ articles has also already been included.
Oh! How exciting! Those are items that are very much welcome as far as I’m concerned! While I don’t use the sticky feature too often, when you need it, you need it and having it be a part of your blog software is certainly a bonus.
Threaded comments is great!
I need to go read about what else is coming in the new version.

I personally think it is the fact that WordPress is open-source that we are now getting all these great features.
Lyndi – I can see that this plugin makes it a lot easier to follow posts and comments. I am going to send this one off to my coder, and see what he can do with it. Thanks for the information.
Squeaky, you seem to like my moderation queue. This time you added an extra ‘q’ to your name and WP thought you were a first time commenter.
I would not spend too much time on this, or at least not until WP 2.7 is released. Threaded comments is definitely going to be part of that version.
Lyndi, have you heard from the rumour mill when 2.7 is likely to be released? They are always v.secretive about these things.
Jim Seftons last blog post..Entrecard – does it work?
I have no idea, but according to the article to which I linked in this aside, a lot of work has already gone into the new version. It sounds there is more to be added so let’s give them a bit for that plus another while for testing. My guess would be middle November sometime.
Great to know that threaded comment will be threaded features of next version of WP

WOW, this is really great plug-in, planning to put it in my Blog.
Use the plugin or simply wait for WP 2.7. There it will be built-in.
